INTENT

• We want all pupils, from EYFS onwards, to see themselves as musicians and to develop a lifelong love and appreciation of music.
• We aim to develop pupils’ skills, knowledge and understanding as performers, composers and listeners so they can engage with music confidently and creatively.
• We want pupils to experience a wide range of musical styles, genres and traditions from different cultures and time periods.
• We encourage pupils to express themselves through music, building confidence, resilience and a willingness to take creative risks.

 

IMPLEMENTATION
Music is taught using the Kapow Music scheme, which follows a spiral curriculum approach to ensure musical knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon over time. Music is taught bi-weekly and units are delivered through a two-year cycle to support mixed-age classes. The sequence of learning is carefully mapped so that pupils are not overloaded and have regular opportunities to revisit and embed prior learning.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, music learning prioritises exploration, imitation and active engagement, allowing children to develop a natural sense of pulse, pitch, rhythm and expression through singing, movement and play. In Key Stage 2, musical skills and knowledge are taught more explicitly, including notation, musical structure and terminology, while continuing to develop performance and composition skills. Musical vocabulary is modelled and reinforced so pupils can talk confidently about music.

Throughout the school, pupils have regular opportunities to perform, including daily singing in assembly, school productions/talent shows, and optional peripatetic instrumental lessons. These experiences support confidence, teamwork and enjoyment of music-making.

 

IMPACT
Pupils leave primary school with a secure understanding of the elements of music and the confidence to perform, compose and listen with intent. They can describe and evaluate music using appropriate vocabulary and demonstrate resilience and creativity in their own musical work. Pupils understand the power of music as a form of expression and wellbeing and continue to engage with music beyond primary school.
