MFL (French)

INTENT

  • We want pupils to develop a positive attitude towards learning languages and other cultures.
  • We aim to equip pupils with the listening, speaking, reading and basic writing skills needed to communicate in French.
  • We want pupils to understand how language learning broadens cultural awareness and global understanding.
  • We aim to lay strong foundations for future language learning.

IMPLEMENTATION
French is taught using the Language Angels scheme, with weekly lessons in Key Stage 2. Learning covers phonics, vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening, reading and some writing, and is delivered through engaging topics and themes. Teachers use precise questioning to assess understanding and develop accuracy.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, pupils are introduced to the idea that different languages exist through songs, stories and simple vocabulary. This early exposure builds curiosity and prepares pupils for more formal language learning in Key Stage 2.

IMPACT
Pupils leave primary school with confidence in speaking and listening in French and an appreciation of other languages and cultures. They are prepared to continue language learning in secondary school with enthusiasm and resilience.
