INTENT

• We want pupils to develop a strong sense of the past and understand how people, events and decisions have shaped the world they live in today.
• We aim to foster curiosity and a love of enquiry so pupils ask perceptive questions, investigate evidence and think critically about historical narratives.
• We want pupils to understand key historical concepts including change and continuity, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, significance and interpretation.
• We encourage pupils to explore identity, culture and society, developing an understanding of diversity and their own place within history.

 

IMPLEMENTATION
History is taught using the Kapow scheme of work, which follows a spiral curriculum model and ensures knowledge and skills are revisited and deepened over time. Units are organised around enquiry questions and taught through a two-year cycle to support mixed-age classes. History is taught bi-weekly, alternating with Geography, and the sequence of learning is carefully mapped to avoid overload while strengthening retention.

In EYFS, children begin to develop historical understanding through stories, timelines and discussion of past and present within their own lives. In Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils build chronological awareness and engage with a wide range of historical sources. Lessons are designed to balance substantive knowledge with disciplinary skills, allowing pupils to investigate change, evaluate evidence and consider multiple perspectives, just as historians do.

 

IMPACT
Pupils leave primary school with a secure understanding of key periods, people and concepts in history. They can ask thoughtful questions, analyse evidence and make informed judgements about the past. Pupils understand how history has shaped the present and are prepared to continue their historical learning with confidence and curiosity.
