INTENT

• We want all pupils, from EYFS onwards, to see themselves as artists who can confidently express ideas, feelings and viewpoints through creative work.
• We aim to develop pupils’ skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media so they can experiment, invent and create with increasing independence and control.
• We want pupils to understand how art and design reflect and shape history, culture and the modern world, and to appreciate the work of artists, designers and makers past and present.
• We aim to nurture creativity, resilience and risk-taking so that pupils value the process of creating as much as the final outcome.

 

IMPLEMENTATION

Art and Design is taught using the Access Art curriculum, which provides an artist-informed, progressive approach that supports creativity for all learners. Learning is organised around revisited themes including drawing and sketchbooks; print, colour and collage; working in three dimensions; paint, surface and texture; and collaboration and community. As pupils move through the school, they build on prior knowledge by combining a wider range of materials, techniques and processes.

 

Art is taught bi-weekly and the sequence of learning is carefully mapped to ensure full coverage. In EYFS, children are given frequent opportunities to explore materials, develop fine motor control and communicate ideas through creative play and adult-led experiences. From Year 1 onwards, all pupils use sketchbooks to record ideas, plan, refine and evaluate their work, with increasing emphasis on annotation and reflection.

 

Across the curriculum, pupils regularly study and discuss the work of artists and designers, developing appropriate technical vocabulary and learning to articulate preferences and opinions respectfully. Opportunities are planned to enrich learning through cross-curricular links, Forest School activities, visits and visitors, where these naturally deepen understanding. Our school values are embedded throughout, particularly reflection, resilience, resourcefulness and risk-taking.

 

IMPACT

Pupils leave primary school with the confidence to explore ideas creatively and the skills to use a range of artistic techniques with purpose and control. They can talk knowledgeably about artists, styles and processes, and reflect thoughtfully on their own work and that of others. Most importantly, pupils understand art as a powerful means of expression and leave with a lifelong appreciation of creativity and culture.
