Physical Education

INTENT

  • We want all pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and sport, building positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing from EYFS onwards.
  • We aim to develop pupils’ physical competence, confidence and resilience so they can participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities.
  • We want pupils to understand the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental wellbeing and to recognise its role in a healthy lifestyle.
  • We encourage pupils to demonstrate teamwork, respect and perseverance, celebrating personal achievement while valuing the success of others.

IMPLEMENTATION
Physical Education is delivered through a broad, progressive curriculum that develops fundamental movement skills before applying these within a wide range of physical activities. Pupils take part in games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming, allowing them to develop coordination, strength, flexibility and tactical understanding. Lessons are designed to be inclusive and engaging, promoting enjoyment, cooperation and self-improvement.

In EYFS, physical development focuses on building core strength, balance and coordination through structured play and adult-led activities. As pupils move through the school, skills are taught progressively and revisited to build confidence and competence. Opportunities are planned for pupils to lead, reflect on performance and evaluate their own progress.

Beyond timetabled lessons, pupils engage in active playtimes led by sports ambassadors, daily physical activity and a range of extra-curricular clubs and competitive opportunities. Health education is woven throughout the curriculum, so pupils understand how exercise, nutrition and mental wellbeing contribute to a balanced lifestyle.

IMPACT
Pupils leave primary school physically confident, motivated and competent to participate in a wide range of physical activities. They understand the importance of staying active for their physical and mental health and demonstrate resilience, teamwork and respect. Pupils are well prepared to continue leading active, healthy lifestyles beyond primary school.
