INTENT

• We want pupils to become confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians who enjoy exploring number and solving problems.
• We aim to develop deep and secure mathematical understanding so pupils can reason, explain and make connections between concepts.
• We want pupils to approach mathematics with curiosity and confidence, selecting efficient strategies and representations to support their thinking.
• We encourage pupils to persevere, take risks and learn from mistakes, developing positive attitudes that support lifelong learning in mathematics.

 

IMPLEMENTATION
Mathematics is taught using the White Rose Maths mastery approach, which is rooted in research and aligned with the National Curriculum. Learning is carefully sequenced into small, logical steps to ensure concepts are understood in depth before moving on. Lessons focus on developing fluency, reasoning and problem solving, with an emphasis on depth over acceleration.

In EYFS, children develop early number sense through practical exploration, structured play and adult-led activities that build a strong foundation for future learning. Across the school, teaching follows a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach, allowing pupils to represent and understand mathematical ideas in different ways. Opportunities for discussion and collaborative learning are built into lessons so pupils can articulate their thinking and learn from others. The mastery approach ensures that all pupils are challenged appropriately while being supported to keep up, not catch up, and ensuring a strong foundational knowledge is built.

 

IMPACT
Pupils leave primary school with a secure understanding of key mathematical concepts and a strong sense of number. They can reason mathematically, explain their thinking clearly and apply their knowledge to solve unfamiliar problems. Pupils are confident, capable mathematicians who are well prepared for the demands of mathematics in Key Stage 3.
