Early Years Foundation Stage Framework

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the national framework that sets the standards for children’s learning, development and care from birth to age five. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and Reception classes in primary schools.

The framework helps everyone working with young children follow the same principles, so that early education and childcare are consistent, high quality and centred around children’s needs. It also gives parents confidence that, wherever their child begins their learning journey, the same expectations and commitments will guide their development.

The EYFS is designed to ensure:

• high-quality provision in all early years settings
• a strong, secure start that supports children as they move through school and life
• good communication between professionals working with your child
• strong partnerships between families and school
• equal opportunities for every child

Areas of Learning

Children in the EYFS learn through a mix of play, exploration and guided activities. Teaching is hands-on, active and carefully planned to help them grow in confidence and curiosity.
