INTENT

• We want pupils to develop the confidence to design, make and evaluate purposeful products that solve real and relevant problems.
• We aim to build pupils’ creative, technical and practical expertise so they can participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
• We want pupils to understand how design and technology have shaped, and continue to shape, everyday life through the work of designers, engineers and inventors.
• We encourage pupils to take creative risks, think critically and reflect thoughtfully on their own ideas and those of others.

 

IMPLEMENTATION
Design and Technology is taught progressively using the Kapow scheme, ensuring pupils build on prior learning year on year. Projects follow a clear design, make and evaluate structure. During the design phase, pupils research, generate ideas and develop design criteria. In the make phase, they select and use appropriate tools, materials and techniques, including textiles, construction materials and food. In the evaluate phase, pupils reflect on the effectiveness of their products and identify improvements.

In EYFS, children explore materials, tools and construction through play and guided activities, laying foundations for later technical skills. Across the school, pupils learn about nutrition and healthy eating through cooking and food preparation. Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure depth, progression and consistency.

 

IMPACT
Pupils leave primary school as confident, resourceful problem-solvers who can apply practical skills creatively and purposefully. They understand the relevance of design and technology in everyday life and approach challenges with resilience and imagination. Pupils are well prepared to see themselves as future designers, makers and innovators.
