Computing
INTENT
- We want pupils to develop the digital knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technological world.
- We aim for pupils to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology who can apply computing skills across the curriculum.
- We want pupils to understand the core areas of computing: computer science, information technology and digital literacy, and how these connect.
- We place a strong emphasis on online safety so pupils can navigate the digital world safely, respectfully and responsibly from EYFS onwards.
IMPLEMENTATION
Computing is taught using the Teach Computing curriculum, which is structured around ten strands within the computing taxonomy and mapped carefully to the National Curriculum. Units are taught through a two-year cycle to support mixed-age classes, with programming content sequenced to build logically on prior learning. Computing is taught bi-weekly.
In EYFS, children begin to explore technology through play, learning how devices work and how to use them safely. As pupils progress through the school, they develop skills in coding, data handling, digital media and information technology, alongside regular revisiting of online safety themes. Cross-curricular links are used where appropriate to give computing a meaningful context and to reinforce skills.
IMPACT
By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident and capable users of a range of digital tools and technologies. They understand how computing supports learning and everyday life and are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Pupils leave with the knowledge and awareness needed to use technology safely, creatively and responsibly.
